1. Tell us a little about yourself and what #loveyourself means to you.
Hey everyone! My name is Morgan Dewey. I am a writer and co-owner of Mommy Convos, a mommy to four kiddies and married to my college sweetheart for over twelve years. My hobbies include: playing games, traveling with my family and hording chocolate in the freezer. I love the powerful message to #loveyourself. I believe it is a choice we make every time we look in the mirror to speak kindly to ourselves. Choosing to #loveyourself means loving yourself today- no matter the size or shape. Love yourself today- because you are worth it- always!
2. Have you ever struggled with self love? Was there a time period or a single experience that made you question your personal worth, and what did you do to overcome that?
I have struggled with self- love throughout my life, especially as a teenager and then as a mother. As a teenager- I felt larger (I was literally inches taller) than all my friends and felt pressure from the modeling world to fit a certain size. So, I resorted to eating and purging in the bathroom and eventually protesting food all together. It was mother who discovered my lies. Through her council and help I saw what I was doing to my body. My mother helped me see the damage I was causing to my teenage body would have major consequences as an adult and could even prevent me from becoming a mother one day. Something I watched my mother struggle to become for years. My mother was instrumental in helping me see the bigger picture. I learned to love myself as a teenager and celebrate my long legs and glorious height.
As an adult and especially as a woman going through post-partum weight changes the ugly voice of self-hatred surfaced. I was certain after having a baby my body would magically pop back to pre-pregnancy size. I reflected on my teenage lessons and choose to love myself anyway. Now, fresh from having my fourth baby I can’t say I have it all figured out. There are days where that nasty cynical voice pops into my head reprimanding me for not walking enough or working harder to loose the baby weight. But here’s the key- I know that I am worth being kind and patient to! My heart would be devastated if the self-hating thoughts I said to myself were said to my own daughter. If I wouldn’t say those nasty thoughts to her, I shouldn’t say it to myself! I pray my daughter never falls into the dark hole of self-hate I once lived in. Today I choose to love myself not matter the size or shape- today and pray through this example my daughter will also love herself.
3. How are you using your social media platform to share positivity with other moms?
Writing is something I love to do which is why I joined the Mommy Convos team almost three years ago. I believe I have been through some hard and unique times in my short life. I am happy to say, however, that I am grateful for the lessons I leaned and I want to share those lessons with other moms. Truthfully, if I can change just one person’s perspective or bring a glimmer of hope from reading something I shared on our site- it’s all worth it!
4. What is your favorite quote about self love?
Without a doubt the quote I love most: No one can make you feel inferior without your consent. By Eleanor Roosevelt.
5. What do you do for YOU? Whether it’s a daily thing or less often, what do you do to ‘treat yo self’?
Goodness, what I do for myself depends on the season of life I’m in. Currently, I have a very fussy baby, and my biggest kids/helpers are in school so my fussy baby and very busy toddler hang out at home. Sometimes, I hang out in my comfy pj pants all day! I’m only teasing… slightly. ☺
Regularly: I write inspirational articles for Mommy Convos. Occasionally: Read! I love to read a good book, but once I get a book started the rest of my life gets put on hold as I immerse myself in the novel characters. Currently we’re reading Harry Potter (illustrated version) to my kids so they can finally watch the second movie. We’re horrible parents and make my kids read the book before they can see the show. Also, my daughter and I go on dates and attend musical theatre productions or get a luxurious pedicure. Bright pink toes are our favorite.
FRIDAY FUN QUESTION! If you could travel to anywhere in the world, where would you go?
Hmmmm anywhere! I love to travel. But today I say: Atlantis in the Bahamas. Sunny, white beaches, gorgeous blue water- oh and it’s a theme park! My sisters and I did a girls cruise trip last Fall and I was twenty weeks pregnant. Unfortunately, I wasn’t allowed to do some of the incredible slides and we were only permitted to spend four hours in Atlantis! Our time was too short and we missed out on so much! This time- I’d take my hubby and we’d spend all day together laughing and doing all the water slides.
Thanks to Friday Apparel for letting me write for your blog and tell my story.
